Antelope Lawns Thirty Years On

Hydroseeding in Antelope is often about lawns that are now three decades old. Antelope began as a planned community in the late 1980s, mostly single-family homes and apartments, and grew to 48,733 residents by 2020. The ground is mostly flat with very few hills and no major bodies of water, at about 121 feet, so most yards have similar soil and drainage, and many original lawns are reaching the end of their run.

When a 30-year-old lawn needs more than fertilizer

Older lawns build up thatch, compaction and weedy patches. Where the grass is still mostly there, core aeration and overseeding brings it back. Where it is more than half weeds or bare, a full renovation is better: kill or scalp the old turf, loosen the soil, correct low spots and hydroseed a fresh stand.

Dry Creek on the west side

Dry Creek forms part of Antelope's western border, running from Elverta Road toward the Placer County line, and Hidden Park lies right next to it. The creek is known for its capacity to cause local flooding, and suburban development borders much of it. Yards and common areas near the creek side should keep sediment on site during any regrade or renovation, with fiber rolls or silt fence along the low edge.

Parks and shared turf

Antelope Community Park covers 34 acres, and smaller parks like Firestone, Roseview and Almond Grove range from about 4.5 to 7.5 acres. HOA common areas and landscape strips around these spaces are a good fit for hydroseed renovation or overseeding, since large areas can be covered quickly without the seams of sod.

Railroad roots

In the late 1800s Antelope was the main settlement in Center Township, home to many railroad workers. In 1973 a rail car of aircraft bombs exploded in the Roseville Yard and damaged most homes in the old settlement. The modern community grew up afterward, which is why the housing stock and lawns here are so uniform in age.

Timing

Fall is the best window for renovation and overseeding in Antelope, so grass roots in with the winter rain. Get a free estimate or call (916) 249-7160.

Antelope Questions

My Antelope lawn is original to the house. Overseed or start over?

If it is mostly grass but thin, aerate and overseed. If weeds or bare spots cover more than half, a full hydroseed renovation usually works out better.

Our HOA has large common turf areas. Is hydroseed practical?

Yes. Large areas are where hydroseed saves the most compared to sod, and we can work in sections to keep areas open.

We back onto Dry Creek. What precautions do you take?

Fiber rolls or silt fence on the low side during work, and no bare soil left uncovered before rain.

How long before a renovated lawn can be used?

Usually several weeks of regular watering before light use, and a couple of mowings before heavy foot traffic.
