Seeding Low River Ground in West Sacramento

Hydroseeding in West Sacramento means working close to river level. The city sits at about 20 feet of elevation, separated from Sacramento by the Sacramento River, and the Sacramento Weir just to the north opens when the river reaches 27.5 feet at the I Street Bridge, sending water through a one-mile bypass into the Yolo Bypass. Water management shapes this place, and it shapes how we grade and seed a yard here too.

Southport, the newer half

Southport makes up about half of West Sacramento's land area. It grew from rural homesteads and small neighborhoods, with housing booms in the early 1990s and early 2000s, and newer neighborhoods include Bridgeway, Gateway, River Ranch and Newport. Many Southport yards are from those two booms, so we see both new-construction lawns and lawns now due for renovation.

Grading flat lots for drainage

On ground this low and flat, a yard can hold water for days after a winter storm. Before spraying, we set a gentle grade so surface water heads for a drain inlet, a swale or the street, and we avoid pushing soil against fences or neighbors' lots. Where a drain line is needed, grading crews can trench it in the same visit.

Keeping sediment out of drains

With storm drains, pump systems and the river so close, sediment control around any grading job matters. For remodels and new construction we install fiber rolls or silt fence on the low side, protect nearby inlets and keep a stabilized entrance so mud does not track into the street.

Farm and port history

The area started with a salmon fishery and farms in the 1840s, then dairies and crops like corn, melons and sweet potatoes. The Port of West Sacramento, which opened to deep sea traffic in 1963, still ships rice. Former farm ground often has good silty soil underneath compacted fill, so loosening and adding a little topsoil goes a long way.

West Sacramento Questions

Can you seed a yard that stays wet all winter?

Yes, after we fix the drainage. On low, flat ground we regrade to move water off the lawn first, and add a drain line if needed.

Is my Southport lawn old enough to renovate?

If it went in during the early 1990s or early 2000s and is thin or weedy, it may be. We can tell you whether overseeding or a full renovation fits.

Do you protect storm drains during yard grading?

Yes. Inlet protection and fiber rolls on the low side are standard on our grading jobs here.

What time of year works best in West Sacramento?

Early fall, so the lawn roots before the rains. Spring is fine too, as long as irrigation is ready for the summer heat.
